2025-03-26

It's safe to say that Volkswagen knows how to make a great small SUV, as the Taos stands out from the competition in several ways despite its simplicity. It is a robust and well-equipped model. Moreover, the brand has begun to show a bit more boldness in its choices of options and colors for the Taos, which has turned out quite well in the end.

The German automaker's small SUV is receiving a significant update for 2025, with improvements to both the exterior and interior. Even the Taos' powertrain has been upgraded. Thanks to these changes, the model is likely to be even more popular this year.

Trims and Pricing

The 2025 Volkswagen Taos lineup consists of five different versions, starting with the Trendline version, which has a starting price of $32,585. Adding all-wheel drive increases the price to $34,585. Next is the Comfortline version, which offers slightly improved equipment and a more appealing design for $38,085. A new addition this year is the Comfortline Black Edition, priced at $39,785. This version features a chrome-free finish with stylish black wheels. Finally, the Highline version sits at the top of the lineup at $41,785.

Category and Competition

There was a time when subcompact SUVs were nothing more than an affordable option from manufacturers. Today, things are different, as they must perform well on multiple levels to appeal to buyers. While some brands focus on performance or design, Volkswagen has chosen to prioritize comfort and driving experience, which is a great approach. That said, the Taos is far from unattractive—in fact, I'd argue the opposite. In short, the German automaker's small SUV has a lot to offer and deserves serious consideration.

Rivals: Buick Envista, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Mitsubishi RVR, Nissan Kicks, Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota Corolla Cross.

Design and Technology

The Volkswagen Taos receives a major update this year, starting with a redesigned front end that is less aggressive and more elegant. The design has been simplified for both the front bumper and headlights, and I must say the result is quite successful. At the rear, the taillights are now connected by a single long light strip, once again adding a more refined finish to the small German SUV. Finally, it also comes with new wheels and a new Serrano Metallic Green color that certainly doesn't go unnoticed.

The interior of the small German SUV has also undergone significant changes thanks to this update. It now features a new floating 8-inch screen for the infotainment system. Volkswagen has found a way to improve the quality of materials inside the cabin to the point where the Taos has little left to envy from luxury brands. Its digital dashboard is among the most attractive in the industry.

Performance

Volkswagen has made several mechanical improvements to the 2025 Taos. It retains its turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, but its power has been increased to 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is more than enough for a vehicle of this size. Additionally, the powertrain now comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission, replacing the 7-speed DSG transmission previously found in all-wheel-drive versions. In my opinion, this is an excellent decision by the German manufacturer, especially in terms of long-term durability, given that the Taos is not a sporty model. As for fuel consumption, Volkswagen claims an average of 8.3 L/100 km in the city and 6.4 L/100 km on the highway.

Weaknesses

  • No sporty or electrified version available.

Strengths

  • One of the most spacious and comfortable cabins in its category.

  • Impressive value for money.

  • A very enjoyable driving experience.

Signature Element

The Volkswagen Taos carries Audi DNA, which is something you can feel in the overall driving experience.

Final Thoughts

There are very few small SUVs that leave little room for criticism, but the Volkswagen Taos is one of them. It is a well-balanced and highly appealing vehicle for most people. It is perfectly capable of replacing a compact car, and its popularity continues to grow.
